 RESPONSIBLE GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY

With increased shipping costs due to climbing oil prices, it makes it especially important to move towards greater self-sufficiency not only in food production but in the search for alternative means of clean and affordable renewable energy.

VIABLE AGRICULTURE
Although our islands have been blessed with fertile soil, a climate which allows for several growing
seasons and multiple cropping cycles, making possible cultivation of a wide variety of foods, we currently import over 85% of the food consumed by visitors and residents alike on a daily basis.  As your State Representative, I will advocate on behalf of the farmers for:
•    Long-term, affordable land leases
•    Regulatory and infrastructural support
•    Incentive package that provides optimal inducement to invest in Hawaii’s agriculture industry

 ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE ENERGY
Hawaii has the ability to meet all of our energy needs from natural resources, such as the sea, sun and wind.  The time is now to stand up and move into a future of responsible growth and sustainability.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND RENTALS
This issue can be resolved by increasing the supply of affordable housing and taking advantage of Federal funds, and incentives available to achieve these goals.  We must also make changes or eliminate an inefficient approval process that can take up to a year for smaller projects to complete and up to seven years for a large development, creating additional costs to the price of homes.

MARIA CARES!
What about the homeless?  Are we just going to throw away our unfortunate ohana?  Being homeless is not a crime.  Anyone of us could be faced with this in the future.  We cannot just continue to chase families out from one area to another.

For years I have supported community issues that are essential to our rural lifestyle.  Most recently, as Vice President of the Ko’olauloa Community Health and Wellness Clinic our team of volunteers have been working diligently to seek a permanent location for our clinic  where the doctors and Hawaiian Healers can provide much needed health care in our area.

We are more than a community, we are a family and together we will find solutions.  I humbly ask for your vote for House District 47 – Laie, Hauula,Punaluu, Kahana, Kaaawa, Waikane, Waiahole, Kahaluu, Ahuimanu, Heeia, Haiku Valley.
